Our moron affiliate has a new moronic idea. I'm not surprised. But I'm beginning to think I should bring Tylenol to the office. When what he wants up starts with "[his country] is strategically located in [region]," you know you're in for a headache of a time. Dude. Forts are strategically placed. Tricorders when on a nudist planet are strategically placed. Countries? Not so much. And it just goes downhill from there. He has an ego the size of fifty countries, really.

Oh well. I'll be meeting with the two pipers again tonight who are planning their competition next year around mine, and we've found one lovely tune already. They're still looking for more, but the tune they found (hills of gilliecraic, something like that?) has suggestive swoops that would be perfectly complimented by twirls and flourishes. It's also an older tune, so theoretically no one else would be playing it, and judges like variety.

And, of course, since Monday night practice is at the normal place, I'll be venturing to the anime store to see if they have gotten in a Quincy cross or a Zaraki plushie. And now I'll be checking for anything YYH, too, since I'm in love with it. I don't recall seeing anything before, but since I didn't know the characters before, I doubt I would have noticed.

This week is going to be insane. We have a working-lunch meeting tomorrow, and a conference/seminar this weekend. I might be scarce from Thursday through Sunday, I don't know what my schedule will be like, or when we'll be getting back. Add to this that MarioKart for the Wii comes out on Sunday... heehee.

I need to finish my magazine article. It's not cooperating, though. I know what it's going to be about, but the first line is just being evil and stupid. I'll get it worked out.

The BleachMob seems to be up for movie cosplaying. :D I've talked to most of them except Lisa. This will rock. :D

I need to finish my metro Kenpachi app. Can probably wrap it up this afternoon, or tomorrow, depending on how much tweaking I feel it needs, and how blasted long it takes to find songs with my memory of them.

Band practice tonight. I'll get to see score sheets. Could be interesting.

I'm feeling better yay! While my normal isn't 'healthy,' it's what I'm used to, and I can function and cook and clean and stuff. It's nice to see my couch again. Things just pile up there when I'm not feeling well. Purse, groceries, hats...

Now if someone would just app Chuu and/or Kuwabara in Mishima, my RP life would be so near complete.

I don't think I've ever slept that long before, except when I've been really sick.

Anyways. While it was fun, yesterday didn't go all that well.

I figured I would do poorly in solos, as the piper and drummer who had agreed to work on a program with me were never both at a practice. I placed fourth again. The three who had the dedicated snare and piper took the top three spots, again. Another great fact - I had three pipers lined up for yesterday, just in case. One didn't show to the games at all. Another didn't show until an hour after I competed. The third showed up about five minutes after. I'm quite glad the pipe major was willing to play for me.

Next year, though, I've got a lead on a piper who wants to play for drum competitions, and is supposed to be good. I'm gonna start now on getting things together.

Band competition... well... see, there are four judges with band competition. One judges drummers, one judges ensemble (how the whole program works together) and two judge pipes. We got first from the drumming judge. However, upon marching in, someone's drones were making a discordant noise (technical term: double-toning). That would have minorly subtracted from our score, it wouldn't have been too bad. But then the piper behind her reached up and did something to her drones to get them to sound fine... as we marched in for competition. You can't do that. It's not allowed. But he did it anyways, and yay, automatic last. This would be the git that sneers at drummers and is rude 99% of the time. The one that has chased off a couple of pipers and drummers.

Bah.

Next year we'll be fielding two competing units. I do not want to be in the same unit as him. Anyone else in the band I'm fine with. I actually like everyone else.

Oh well. Drumming took first. I think I'll gloat a little about that...

The parade in The Villages went well. Our snare didn't show up until last minute, which had a lot of us worried, but she made it just in time. The band was split and playing at two different locations on a weekday afternoon, so it wasn't easy to get a lot of people out there, but we have a sufficient number. Our group has six pipers, a bass, a swing tenor (guess who) and a snare. The other one wound up with seven pipers, I believe, as well as the three drummers.

Fiddler's Green was awesome. I love playing at that pub. There's always so much energy, even if it does feel like a sauna inside. A very cute cop told us swing tenors we did an excellent job, but we had to get back to help the pipers warm up again instead of being able to talk further. We had all four swing tenors there. When Kelly, Jeff, and I are together, things get even more fun. Jeff and I can improvise at the drop of a hat, and Kelly goes with it. Alex... would be okay if he actually tried. But he's a pre-adolescent boy. Nothing holds his interest, and he doesn't practice.

The last of three performances at Fiddler's was awesome. Jeff and I had the stage and were going all out. In the crush of the crowd poor Kelly got stuck with Alex. The lights were hot, I kept hitting the microphone stand (Jeff hit the microphone) but it was a blast. The band performed our competition medly, and the whole crowd got into it. The strathespey, which is a dance tune, had the perfect bounce to it, and our jig was fast and crisp. The ending wasn't precise, but it didn't have to be, not in a crowded pub where people are bumping pipers. Yay St. Patrick's Day!

Of course, on the other hand, I got back to work this morning to find out policy/doctrine guy inadvertently pulled the rug out from under us. He told our moron affiliate essentially "In the end, it's your site, and you can do what you want, but we all should be aware of how things affect us as a whole, and strive to be aware of the implications regarding what we publish. We need a unified image." Moron affiliate read that how he wanted to as a "Go for it!" and so now I have to put up the rubbish he wants on his site.

Oh well. Monday was awesome. :D

I like gigs.

Played this morning for the FBI national leadership conference. That was interesting, a cop every five feet, had to be photographed, our ID was run through machines, walked around with interesting name badge/tags. Got to keep them, hee.

The trip home wasn't so much fun. On getting to the location it's at, the road splits and becomes one way. We're heading out, and I point this out to mom. She asks if I'm sure, says she didn't think it did, and decides to follow a piper instead of what I said. He tries to turn the wrong way onto the... surprise... one way street. Clearly he's lost. So we turn back around, headed for the way I said to go, and she's saying "Are you sure?" "I didn't see this..." "I need to remember to get reverse directions from places too.."

Wonder of wonders, I led us right. Granted, I do have a great sense of direction when I'm caring or paying attention. Just like Dad. And Dad even listens to me when I contradict him on directions, because 99% of the time, I'm right. Mom... does not listen. Ever. Hai, Mom, this is Jackie speaking. Not Meghan. This is the daughter who got off the freeway that was closed due to an accident and found her way home with ease, instead of the one who called in panic six or seven times. Please to be giving me the benefit of the doubt every once in a while. Kthxbai.

In another note, my Mishima Maes-muse (try saying that ten times fast) was very intrigued by the tables set up at the conference, and wanted to test some of the gadgets. I looked, but I did not touch. I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, but I do have some impulse control. Most of the time.

Two more gigs tonight: a parade, which is always a challenge, and then playing at a great Irish pub. I love playing at that pub. Especially because apparently last year, just after we left, a party behind it invited the band to their yard to play and eat and drink. Here's not-so-secretly hoping I get to have fun this time too. :D

First gig of this year's St. Patrick's Day rush went well last night, though it was a bit exhausting. Tomorrow is another, though they didn't need me for that one. Monday will be a bit insane, though. Playing for a conference, then a parade, then a pub.

Sidenote: How do I forget how much sex there is in James Bond movies? I think Bond, I think explosions and that theme tune that gets stuck in my head, and gadgets. But watching one again... DANG. It's like every ten minutes he's either getting laid or he's talking about it...

Editor-in-chief, a mild-mannered and mostly soft-spoken man, is yelling at policy guy. The problem is not yet solved, but... he's yelling on my behalf and I didn't even ask him to.

The Mishima thing looks like it's settled. It was not nearly as bad as I thought things were going to be. And Maes is awake and eager to leap into things.

There have been a couple of cheerful emails from our pipe major on upcoming events. Granted, he's a very cheerful guy. But there doesn't seem to be any tension there. I'll know for sure when practice rolls around tonight, but... maybe they got things settled. I know our snare corporal was still talking to the pipe major when I got hauled off.

Speaking of being hauled off... that story is a little amusing. One of the other drummers went to my ride and said "Hey, it's Jackie's birthday. She decided to head out to the bar with us." My ride accepted that, grabbed the drums, and left. I got outside to see no car. This was, of course, the one night I forget my cell phone. So I'm standing there wondering if I've been completely forgotten when half the drum corp comes up and says "Hey! You're going out with us! Get in the Corvette!" So I got in the Corvette, and wound up at a bar, drinking Sprite and playing darts. And while they completely kicked my butt at real-life darts, I can take them all in Wii darts any day.

Basically, I'm doing a lot better. Especially since I can eat again today.

4th place out of 8 swing tenors.

The ones who took the top three positions stepped it up from last week. I didn't. Rather, I didn't enough. I did change one flourish to be difficult and dramatic, and it looked awesome. But it was still at amateur level, which we're competing at. They did something that was borderline pro level. I can do that too. But I've been lazy. My competition had been performing with less difficulty than me at amateur level, so I didn't bother to work at it.

Really, serves me right for being lazy.

Next games, the last of the season, is April 12th. I've already talked to Ron and Leah, a piper and a snare, respectively. It's time to go flashy.

If I get first at those games in Dunedin, I win overall. If I get a second and M (who got first yesterday) does not get first, I win overall.

Shaking the dice for future rolling commences tomorrow night at practice.

(Oh, and the band placed 3rd. Kinda happens by default when one of a piper's drones falls out of a bag, no matter how good you perform. Someone stops, you're gone. But we're still in it too, points-wise... if we can get a first at Dunedin, we can win overall as well. Really... in both solo tenor and band competitions, everyone is too close to call it. Dunedin is the determiner.)

Work had an appreciation dinner last night, catered by a good barbecue place. That was nice, though... a little odd. I was by far the youngest person there. There was at least a ten-year age-gap between me and the next person. Oh well. The table I sat at was friendly, and we chatted quite a bit. Now I know some of the people who work on the floor below mine, hee.

I've been stressing a bit because I think my mishima Maes Hughes is OOC... but talking to a couple of people, I've been told he's only slightly that way. I was toying with the idea of taking a week break from just him and trying to focus more on who he is, figure it out, but if it's as little as I'm being told, I think I can keep him going and steadily refine him. Also, taking him out for a week would really affect the Turks, and Reno, Rufus, and Cissnei seem to be having a great time. I'll back Maes down a bit, make him not-so-much overt... The big problem is that canon Maes is clever and subtle. And I'm making him blunder and stumble. I'm really going to pay more attention to that. The SFPD investigations will likely tone down, slow down... he won't go so hard on Cissnei since it was only a little slip-up on her part... He deserves the work.

Mishima Kenpachi is stressed. But there is a Yumichika now, and Kenpachi knows he can trust Ayasegawa's judgment. That's going to be a huge help, I think.

Highland Games again tomorrow! Please let Javier show up this time... I need someone who knows how to compete for drumming competitions.

We, as a band, took first place at the games yesterday. This was highly unexpected, since we tenors only heard the music for the first time on Monday, AND the reason we got first was because of the drumming and ensemble judges. The piping judges put us lower. So we drummers saved the pipers. About time they're thankful, hee. Though the one piper who is always griping about drummers vanished right when that was discovered on our score sheets. How... surprising. Yeah. But yay!

I got third out of five tenors, for solo competition. But there was still luck there - I should have been disqualified, but I impressed the judge with my playing so much that he placed me. I'll explain. For drumming solo competition, you play with a piper. The piper I'd asked right in the beginning of the season to play all the games for me did not show. My backup piper was needed for the Games opening ceremony, so he couldn't play. So I wound up with another piper I'd not played with before. This wouldn't be a problem, normally. Most of our pipers are quite good. But there is one slight difference in piping and drumming solos - if you mess up right in the beginning, pipers are allowed to start over. Drummers are NOT. This gets you disqualified.

We start playing, and it's obvious something has happened to her drones. (The drones are the three long pipes on the top of the bag - they provide the deep, continuous background sound of the pipes.) They sound abysmal. They're not just off-key with the chanter (the played portion of the pipes, which is how you control what notes are coming out of the pipes), they're off-key with each other too. I'm still playing, because I can't stop. She stops. Completely. I can't compete without a tune. I could keep the beat, but it's not allowed. Thinking I was done, I stopped. She started apologizing to the judge profusely, telling him how it's her fault, that she doesn't know what happened, to please let us go again. The judge is one I've had before. He looks and acts a bit like a bear. Sometimes he'll be happy and friendly, other times he'll rip your head off, and you never know what's going to happen. He grimaced, looking quite not-happy, but then waved his hand.

We started again, her pipes still sounded horrible, and she couldn't stick to a steady beat. I did. This fact alone saved me. He'd been considering just giving comments, but disqualifying me anyways, but he was impressed.

Afterwards, looking at my comment sheet, I saw that everything was marked high. So I went and asked if he had any advice for me. He looked very amused, and said, "I shouldn't tell you this. But get a better piper. That's your only problem, the only reason you didn't get first. You kept the beat steady, when she didn't. Good job. Of course, I can't put that on the sheets. But get a better piper."

So... I did get lucky in that I actually got points instead of being disqualified.

The other lucky thing? The girls that got first and second... haven't placed before. They weren't at Fort Lauderdale, they didn't place at Orlando. So I'm well in the lead with points! Whee!

Next weekend is Zephyrhills. I'll be talking to several pipers tomorrow night, seeing if I can get more backups for solo competition. Here's hoping.

Health sidenote: Started out that morning doing better than I have in several weeks, but by the end of the day it really hurt to take a breath. I'm thinking the long-action inhaler is doing me good, but the short-term one isn't doing much at all.

Anyways. It's still Highland Games season, and even with breathing difficulties I'm competing in solo swing tenor, hoping to get Champion Supreme this year. There are five different locations that we're competing at this year. For each first place, you get 88 points, for each second, 56, for each third, 24 or 25 (I forget which.)

At the first games of the season I took first, and a girl I'll call M took second.

At the second games, I was in China. Three people I don't know placed. M did not.

So, going into the third games of this season, tomorrow, I'm tied with 88 points for first.

Here's hoping. :D

In even more notes... the Fort Lauderdale Highland Games was yesterday. Guess who won Amateur Swing Tenor? :D :D :D :D Took a picture of the trophy to test out the little camera Lisa not just loaned me, but gave me, so that will be among the China picture post when it goes up. I beat a girl taught by the best Swing Tenor in the state and region, someone who beat me once last year and I beat once last year. We're off to a good start. :D

I haven't had a scraped elbow in about ten years. Apparently, that's too long. Poor elbow.

Anyways, my church had our annual Christmas party, and this year the theme was 'Reindeer Games.' Only eight reindeer ever performed well enough to qualify for pulling Santa's sleigh, so our pastor decided this meant the games had to be physically tough. They were.

I made it without injury through the paper relay, the snowball fight, and the snowball-clean-up-race (smart game, hee). But then it was the wheelbarrow racing. It's been ages since I have wheelbarrow raced. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, one person lifts the legs of a second, and the second runs on their hands. Dad had my legs. We did very well the first time, moving quickly. The second time, though, we were nearly halfway done when the pastor yelled "Twenty seconds!" Dad sped up. There was no way I could keep up with him jogging. We crashed dramatically. My arms and elbow hurt. But it was fun.

The BleachMob Christmas party did not go as planned.

Jason, Logan, and Lisa made it. It was cool to see Logan again; since he lives so far away he hadn't been to any of the gatherings, and I hadn't seen him since AFO. We were first supposed to go to Amura. Amura is apparently no longer open on Saturdays. We went to Crispers instead.

After a difficult time figuring out how the restaurant worked, Logan showed interest in the Hot Russian sandwich. He rapidly backtracked, but it was too late. Jason teased him about it for almost two hours... We discussed Avatar, and Laura's idea that we cosplay Avatar characters one day. Logan's for it, might cosplay Iroh. Jason still hasn't seen it. And I think he's probably still scared by 'the giant flying thing,' Appa.

We watched the Death Note movie, which is apparently only the first half. It was different from the manga, but in a good way, mostly.

Then Lisa came over and we played Super Smash Brothers Melee. I'm not very good at it. But it is fun being Kirby and getting different hats. We unlocked the stage that turns. I fell more times than I can count. I don't like that stage... Because of Lisa's work schedule she had to leave after that.

For dinner we were going to get Chinese food at Panda Express, but Jason decided he was too good for my directions and we drove in a giant circle. He saw Smokey Bones so we headed there, but ended up driving in more circles to get to it. That was great. Dinner was also good, but we were still rather full from Crispers and ice cream.

Went back to my place, watched the two most recent Bleach Eps, checked out the PSP Bleach game, discussed posters, Chocolate Rain, and facebook, and I gave them the mini-lesson in swing-tenor I gave Laura, Lauren, and Taisa. Jason figured out in five minutes a move that took one of our band's swing tenors about two years and took me a day. I'm only slightly jealous. Really. Just slightly. First time picking up the sticks. What the heck...

After that, they headed out. It was about 1:30 a.m. We talked a bit by the cars as it started to sprinkle, but it was late.

Both things were fun. Here's hoping, though, that we can pull off a Bleach Mob Party instead of a Moblet Party...

A minor sidenote: I have a burn on my left hand, and no idea how it got there...

My bento-style tray that I was making for my slab ceramic thingy actually looks pretty cool. It tore on the way to the shelf, but next week I'll repair it when it's a little more stable. So no comparison to a blind guy this week. ;)

Had a band gig this morning. If you have the Golf Channel and see some national kid's thingy held in Celebration, FL, and see a band playing it, that would be us.

And that would be the news... oh, I've finally sketched out the plushies. So I can figure out now what I need to make them. :)

The band is going to twice-a-week practice again now instead of just once a week, as competition season is fast approaching. Also, we're planning on fielding three competition units, and this will be a mess. So we need the extra work.

Kelly will probably be back, and that will be nice. We have four regular swing tenors, and she's the only other one into anime, Babylon 5, Dr. Who... basically, geekdom. I still have to get her into Bleach. I shall work on it. ;) I've gotten just a couple of people addicted.

Friday night marks when I go take ceramics class over at the community college. Yep, gradumacated and now I'm going back. But it will be with Lisa and her sister, and it's ceramics, so it should be much fun. I like making stuff, and learning about making stuff.

I botched my last performance. The very first part of a swing tenor program is the three-beat-roll, and I messed it up, hitting two of the three beats instead of all three. If I did my math correctly, I finish the season in second place. It's not bad, but it's not what I wanted, either. I'm probably going to stay amateur for one more year.

Am oddly tired. Dunno why. Anyways, wandering off again.

I have decided, that since Book Seven is the last Harry Potter book, I shall go to a release party. Lisa has picked the place. We will see if we get trampled by hordes of munchkins.

Finally, thanks to NBC putting some of their shows online, I am caught up with Heroes. It's been hard with the VCR that absolutely refuses to record when programmed and band practices being on Monday nights. Some general thingies, warning for spoilers:

A few months ago Nenya had a 'write a lj entry that's fake but could be real' thing. Some of you may remember it. For those who don't, it's HERE. It was fun, and I want to play with it more, but I don't see it being welcomed in any professional setting. I'm playing with the idea of starting a fake livejournal starring those characters, introducing a psuedo-me and then going on the 'adventures.' Would like feedback on this idea.

Last thing in this rambling, wandering post... When you win (or place in) a competition at a Highland Games you get points: 88 for first, 56 for second, 38 for third, and 25 for fourth. By adding up all the points that people have received in this year's Swing Tenor competition, I found out I'm in the lead by six points still. All I have to do is win ONE first, and I've got it. Two, and two shiny golds, would be awesomeness, but I just need one. I may be able to pull it off. :D

Went to the Highland Games on Saturday, my birthday, and took second again. That was good news and bad news - I beat one of the Dunedin girls, who are learning from the best swing tenor in the state, but I lost to the other one and still didn't get first. There are two highland game solo competitions left this season. If I take first at both of them, I can still win Champion Supreme. My chances are slim, but it's possible. I could have had it at Zephyrhills (the March 3rd location) if I hadn't messed up on the fourth flourish. It was new, and shiny, and I tried it and bobbled it. The judge noticed, and I took second. Oh well.

Our band took 3rd again. It was very cold, though, and rainy, so we all had problems. The swing tenors couldn't feel their fingers, the bagpipers had water going down their drones, etc. If we take first once, though, we could still pull off Champion Supreme there. There is one more games remaining for band competition. (One of the games, Sarasota, decided that it would be cheaper if they didn't have band competition, but just had solo. They still think that bands will show up, though. Not a chance... they show up for points, travel money, and winnings money.)

After the cold and wet games we went to a buffet. I left the room to get a second plate (wondering why no one wanted to come with me) and returned to have the whole room (including complete strangers) burst into "Happy Birthday." I think I was blushing, because of the way Kelly (one of our other swing tenors) was laughing at me, but I couldn't feel my cheeks yet, so I don't know for sure.

The games are so much fun. In a way I wish there were more of them, no matter how exhausted I am at the end of each games day. I love hanging out with my bandmates, and some of the people from other bands. It's a very friendly atmosphere. No one seems to be cutthroat or out for blood, everyone seems amiable.

Went to band practice Monday night and Tinker (one of the snare drummers) asked me if I had gotten my birthday stripper yet. I said no and one of the married and slightly-too-old-for-me snares acted like he was going to pull off his shirt. Very amusing.

If all goes well, April 7th we should have the best tenor in the state, Tim, down to give Kelly, Jeff, and myself a lesson. That will be nice. By then I'll know if I need to put together a professional program (if I win Champion Supreme) or just need to polish and perfect my amateur program. While I will be disappointed if I don't win, it would be a bit of an upset for me to win. I began learning tenor mid-February of last year, and this is my first season competing. Megan, the Dunedin tenor who has been beating me, is (I'm pretty sure) in her second season competing. I'm pretty sure I saw her name on the sheets last year. Not certain, though. She could be new to it too.

All in all, I had fun, and I should still have fun. Here's hoping, though, that I'm able to nab first in the next two games. Of course, I don't know where I'd hang the medals, heh. I've got my silver and bronze medals hanging from my lamp and fan pull-cords, and my silver medal-on-a-pin pinned to the bronze ribbon. Hm. Well... I do have doorknobs. Heehee.

We had our third Highland Games of the season this past weekend. Our group, the grade 4A band, took third again. :( Our first games we took first, and I don't know what happened. The drumline was superbly clean. Oh well.

I competed solo for my second time and got second place. :) My first time I took third, so maybe these next games, on my birthday, I can give myself a present - a blue ribbon with a shiny gold medal attached. I'm in the lead for champion supreme in tenors this year; I've got 6 more points than the two closest to me. If I can get a first (even better, two firsts), I may just win this thing.
